In 2025 I was accepted into the Exploration of Sports, Mega Events and Food in Japan program. This program uses the Olympic Games as a lens to better understand how large, international events affect the local communities in host countries. Immersion in this different country provided real perspectives and gave us students the opportunity to witness and partake in Japanese culture.
The days started early, consisting mostly of tours and informational sessions in the morning. While walking swiftly through the crisp autumn air, my group was able to learn new historic information about the country and their Olympic involvement in the presence of its just blooming cherry blossoms and ever welcoming community. Being able to learn how these large events, although considered entertainment, can have major detrimental effects on local communities has increased my personal curiosity about the impacts other communities face based on what their government deems important.
We were also able to see how Japanese communities use food to reflect and emphasize their culture. From the use of fresh ingredients purchased at local markets to the unity these meals offer when consumed during large gatherings, Japan’s attention to detail and commitment to use quality ingredients demonstrate the country’s deep pride in their history and values.
Exposure to such a rich culture has also significantly strengthened my pursuit of becoming a psychiatrist to provide personalized care that promotes both mental stability and overall wellbeing.
Overall, learning new information about different countries while witnessing their culture firsthand is one of the best experiences a student can take advantage of at their university. This program not only enriched my education and personal growth but also broadened my ideas about culture and expression.
