Through Michigan State University, and with the help of generous scholarship donors, I embarked on a fantastic study abroad opportunity.
As a psychology major, I have taken many psychology courses. However, I enjoyed having the opportunity to learn about psychology in a new setting and teaching style. I was also able to take a course in Modern Greek, the native language of Greece. This helped a lot, as some people in Greece do not speak English very well, making it easier to communicate.
I enjoyed being able to experience a culture that is different from my own. I have always lived close to home, and studying abroad has given me a new perspective and has shown me what I can do once I graduate. This will help me in my future career as I can see the various backgrounds and societies one may come from.
One thing that surprised me was how different it was from what I expected. The area was more residential and did not look like what was seen on social media. This, however, made me appreciate it even more.
I felt as though I was truly experiencing Greek life and culture. Everyone was extremely kind and welcoming, no matter where I went: around the mainland or on the islands. I loved how proud the natives were of their culture and history. I loved hearing the stories of Greek gods and goddesses and seeing the temples built in their honor.
This experience has shown me that it is possible to travel the world, and on a personal level, it has shown me that I can do it. I truly appreciated all the resources the American College of Greece had for study abroad students to help us while we were there. I also loved the amount of freedom we had. We could travel to multiple Greek islands on weekends, and I could even spend a weekend in Austria.
This was truly an experience that I will never forget, and I will be forever grateful for this opportunity.
