Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS)。

Dear Parents,
Greetings!
Thank you for your trust in sending your child to Michigan State University for higher education, allowing him or her to spend the most valuable years of youth here. As the Office of China Programs, we serve as a bridge for international collaboration at the university. We are not only responsible for cooperation and exchange with higher education institutions in China, but also for working with departments across the university to assist with all matters related to China, including support and services for Chinese international students.
Research has shown that international students studying in countries where the language is not their native tongue face several major challenges:
Language
Culture
Learning styles and habits
Mental health and emotional resilience
Interpersonal and social relationships
Before arriving at an American university, international students usually have some understanding of the U.S. through movies and various media. However, truly adapting to life in the U.S. and meeting the expectations of an American university is a completely different experience—often filled with confusion and challenges. Compared to Chinese universities, American universities place stricter academic demands, emphasize independent thinking, encourage teamwork, value academic integrity, and strictly prohibit plagiarism. There are no class-based groupings or counselors like in Chinese universities. Instead, students are expected to manage themselves and take full responsibility for their actions. U.S. universities also operate on a credit system and generally do not have make-up exams or similar policies. These features can be particularly challenging for Chinese international students, especially undergraduates.
Michigan State University actively addresses the challenges faced by international students and provides strong support to help them adapt both academically and personally. One of the most important resources is the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS). If international students encounter any issues, OISS is the place to go for assistance. For more information, please visit the OISS website: https://oiss.isp.msu.edu/
