International Symposium on Certification and Traceability for Food Safety and Quality

18-19 October, 2007, Beijing, China

I. Introduction

With the worldwide growth of trade in food and agricultural products, there has been growing global public concern about and awareness of food safety and quality.  In addition, this growing awareness can be used to promote environmental improvements in the countryside by reducing agricultural chemical use.

Moreover, China is emerging as a major player in international trade in food and agricultural products.  Such products require greater attention to food safety, quality and environmental issues.  These are now major concerns of the Chinese and other governments as well as of retailers and consumers.  Enhanced attention to these issues is an integral part of the Chinese government’s goal of building a new countryside for a harmonious society.

To date, a wide range of systems of certification and traceability has been put into practice, but they are neither consistent with each other nor widely understood.  This symposium will offer an opportunity for representatives of government agencies, international agencies, academic scientists, private sector, and NGOs to come together to discuss issues of common interest.

This Symposium is co-sponsored and supported by Chinese Ministry of Agriculture/Department of Marketing and Information, the United States Department of Agriculture/Economic Research Service, the USDA Foreign Agriculture Service, and organized by Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Michigan State University (MSU) and Agri-food Quality and Safety Center (AQSC).  Mead Johnson has also generously provided support.
