Education Reform and Transformation in China in the New Era

The 19th CPC Congress report explicitly pointed out that China will “speed up the modernization of education” and “provide better online education.” With the development and application of modern science and technology such as cloud computing, big data, Internet, and artificial intelligence, the structure and shape of education and the teaching system are undergoing changes and transformations, and a new educational concept and mode-wisdom education is gradually formed. Wisdom education is the advanced stage of the development of information education. It provides leaners with intelligent and efficient educational services, and promotes individualized growth and intellectual development of students.

Reform 1: Transforming from Digital Education to Wisdom Education

At present, there are many different understandings on the connotation of Wisdom Education both in China and abroad. There are two kinds of understanding from the perspective of education and from the perspective of informationization. The new mode of intelligence education studied and constructed from the perspective of informationization under the background of "Internet +” is the objective requirement of the development of the times.

On the one hand, Wisdom Education is the inevitable result of the development of informatization education. The early stage of informationization education is digital education. Since the "digital earth" was put forward at the end of the last century and its application in education, the concepts of digital education, digital campus and digital learning have emerged.

On the other hand, Wisdom Education is a new education model that makes use of the new generation of information technology to better "serve all students," providing intelligent and efficient educational services for learners. It forms an ideal learning environment that has the ability to sense intelligence, enhance communication and interaction and is conducive to collaborative inquiry to support the teaching of wisdom, so that each learner can grow along a path that meets the characteristics of individuality.

Reform II: Transforming from Traditional Classroom to Smart Learning Environments

The implementation of smart education needs to build and provide students with an intelligent learning environment, and modern information technologies such as the Internet and artificial intelligence provides important means for this. The front-end application is the use of smart mobile terminal devices such as smart phones and tablet computers, and APP services. Through the classroom wireless network, the data transmission and exchange of the “cloud,” “network” and “end” are realized; forming a smart learning support environment-based dynamic learning data analysis.

The smart learning environment has four characteristics in service learning. First is the digitalization of teaching. Data can accurately read students learning situations, and achieve the goal of “learning-based teaching”; second is the immediate feedback of evaluation. It improves student learning through the entire process of teaching learning-diagnosis and evaluation. Third is the three-dimensional interaction. The docking of end-tools and its cloud service platform facilitated the all-time and space-time interactions to promote collaborative learning. Fourth is the intelligent resource push. Resources of learning materials and tutoring lessons are intelligently pushed to students based on their special needs.

Reform III: Transforming from Empirical Teaching to Evidence-based Teaching

In the "Internet +" era, the way of thinking in education has changed, and data change education is the core idea of teaching reform. Based on the collection, analysis, and application of the whole process of teaching big data, traditional empirical teaching is changing to evidence-based teaching.

First, data is a key element of wisdom education in the context of “Internet +.” The use of dynamic data in the whole teaching process for learning assessment analysis is a technical feature of the wisdom class construction. Data-based teaching has formed a new teaching model.

Second, various types of teaching data exist extensively throughout the learning process. In classroom teaching, a large amount of teaching behavior data and process data are generated. This data is derived from classroom interaction, tests, case studies, real-time feedback, student assignments, examinations, and learning community visits. The entire process of digital learning reflects students’ learning attitudes, the most important indicator of learning effectiveness.

Third, evidence-based teaching is realized through teaching data mining and application. Through “accompanying” collection and aggregation of teaching data, students can accurately understand the level of knowledge and skills they have mastered, formulate teaching decisions based on big data, adjust classroom teaching strategies in time, and better serve students’ learning. At the same time, they can achieve classroom teaching. Evidence-based teaching has always been the rational form of future education that people are pursuing.

Reform IV: From "Standardized Production" to Personalized Learning

In the era of industrialization, a production model whose main features are scale, standardization, and task-oriented requires the training of a large number of standardized talents with basic knowledge and skills and strict compliance. Wisdom education should break the drawbacks of "class teaching system" and "standardization production" of traditional education, and use the Internet and artificial intelligence techniques to truly realize personalized learning.

To implement personalized learning, we must make profound changes in teaching content, methods, means, and organizational forms, change unified and single teaching modes, and advocate learning individuality and diversity. The first individualization is the learning content. Corresponding teaching content and teaching schedule are formulated accordingly to suit the individualized learning needs of students. The second individualization is learning method. Based on the data analysis of learning behavior and learning process, different teaching strategies and methods are adopted to teach students according to their aptitude. The third individualization is learning situation. Individual Learning activities can be developed through the use of modern teaching techniques, and the use of various new media and new technologies. The fourth individualization is learning organization forms. Students can independently choose what to study, and can communicate individually and equally with teachers and partners. Everyone will enjoy a truly personalized education.
